​​​Environmental Management Plan of «Akamas Peninsula» (Natura 2000 Network) in Cyprus

Main Project Characteristics:

  • Akamas Peninsula is located on the north-western tip of Cyprus Republic, in the Paphos District, and covers a total area of 18.131 ha, 43,57% of which is covered by sea 56,43% by land. Τhe terrestrial part covers an area of 10.231 ha, of which 7.155 ha is State forest.
  • Environmental consulting to project cofinanced through EU Funds in accordance with the 92/43/EEC Directive.
  • Organizing preliminary contacts with local stakeholders towards data collection
  • Public consultation with local communities
  • Submission of intermediary reviews and editions to the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment in accordance with the contract terms’ time schedule
  • Description of existing conditions and human driven pressures based on bibliographical data such as Red Data Book, Life Projects for Fauna and Flora species, mapping data, Fisheries Law, Network infrastructure data etc. Emphasis given to characteristics of major importance such as sea turtles, inland dunes, “Akamas” gorge, endemic flora species, Chiroptera populations, Pinus sp. forests etc. Assessment of evolutionary trends concerning the conservation status of habitats and species as well as main pressures and threats due to touristic development and various economic activities.
  • Defining the main Conservation Objectives for achieving the Favourable Conservation Status for species and habitats according to the 92/43/EEC Directive
  • Monitoring plan for the species Tulipa cypria
  • Conduct of monitoring plan for 4 Inland dune habitats
  • Proposed environmental management (proposal for protection zones’ delineation, proposed measures aiming towards the area’s protection and management)
  • Proposals for the management plan implementation related to protection of turtle species Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas
  • Cost estimation of planned projects, works and studies, promoting the accessibility of the project folder to the public, and final report of tasks accomplished.
  • Mapping data processing using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for the conduct of an illuminating presentation of characteristics pertaining to geology, topography, hydrology, land use, regional boundaries, vegetation, habitats, coastline visibility and protection zones.
