Urban design Project for the public space in-between the Ship Repair Zone of Perama
and the urban fabric of Perama, Piraeus, Greece

Urban design Project for the public space in-between the Ship Repair Zone of Perama and the urban fabric of Perama, Piraeus, Greece

The project included:

  • Existing Land Use Inventory and Micro-Analysis

  • Report on the existing legal framework, the plans and development actions

  • Urban interventions and design proposals. The proposed interventions formed a set of regulations aimed at improving both land use and environmental conditions in the study area, highlighting the specificity of the urban fabric and upgrading it.

The main objective of the project was the implementation of policies to:

  • Improve the accessibility (pedestrians and cars, as well as heavy vehicles moving in the area),

  • Facilitate activities such as commercial and residential moves

  • Increase the attractiveness, convenience and safety of all modes of transportation by implementing “complete streets” that are designed to serve a broader range of transportation modes, focusing on pedestrians, cyclists and transit service, and function in the context of surrounding land uses

  • Create continuous and accessible sidewalks in order to improve mobility for all pedestrians and, particularly, for pedestrians with disabilities.

  • Integrate Land Uses with Major Pedestrian Generators/ Attractors. This would include integrating developments of major pedestrian generator with major attractor (residential and commercial activity area, point of interests); putting activity nodes, generators and attractors within the neighborhood in a walking distance of 500 m and, finally,

  • Upgrade the aesthetics of the axis of Dimokratias Avenue which forms a “corridor” between the Ship Repair Zone and the dense urban fabric of Perama.

Furthermore, emphasis has been given to sustainable design proposals and guidelines for urban equipment in the Ship Repair – Urban Zone frontline.
