Main characteristics:

  • Construction of the new stadium of Panathinaikos at Votanikos with a capacity of 40,000 seats including commercial and complementary uses
  • Creation of an urban park and construction of underground and overground parking areas of 1,715 spaces (1,000 of common use and 715 for the football stadium) 
  • The Double Regeneration Votanikos – Alexandras Avenue programme is related, on the one hand, to the abolishment of the existing and potential structure within a suffocating structured region (Ampelokipoi) and, on the other, to the support of the upgrading of part of an extremely downgrading area in the city center (Votanikos)
  • The iintervention in Votanikos region is accompanied by the simultaneous implementation of basic infrastructure works (road, transportation, hydraulic and others) which are estimated to be the starting point for the expected upgrading of Elaionas region in combination with the replacement of deserted and illegal infrastructures. 

Important environmental issues:

  • Removal of uses incompatible with the landscape and the operation of the city
  • Planning of the stadium so as to be on the one hand a functional and safe stadium and on the other to take into account the upgrading of the hand-made and natural environment (e.g. bioclimatic design, landscape interventions, refuse, waste and rainwater management)
  • Issues of urban planning aiming at solving long standing problems of the area (traffic, lack of green areas, Prophet Daniel stream and other infrastructure works)
  • Air and acoustic environmental impact assessment as well as traffic impact assessment
