Environmental Impact Assessment for the existing hydroelectric power plants in the Acheloos River
Environmental Impact Assessment for the existing hydroelectric power plants in the Acheloos River
Country: Greece
Region: Sterea Ellada – Prefecture of Evritania and Aetoloakarnania
Duration: December 2003 – July 2007
Client: PUBLIC POWER CORPORATION (PPC SA), Directorate of Hydroelectric Generation
Main characteristics:
- Ex post analysis of the environmental impacts and environmental licensing procedure of existing big infrastructure works built prior to 1970
- Environmental comparison of alternative solutions of the projects’ combined operation
- Compilation of a plan of technical interventions so that the “environmentally problematic” conditions in the wider region of the works (i.e. formation of the river bed downstream of Stratos dam) can be improved
- Evaluation – assessment of the environmental impacts that might be or have been caused during the project’s construction and operation phases
Important environmental issues:
- Illegal disposal of solid and liquid waste in the reservoirs and the areas around the dams
- Irrigation and water supply networks of Kastrakio dam
- Environmental condition of the delta of the Acheloos river
- Correlation of the environmental dimension of the works with the power generation of the Hydroelectric Power Plants and the wider electrification network in Sterea Ellada
- Compilation of the recommended environmental interventions so that the best possible protection of the environment can be improved
