Detailed Project Description

  • Kassandra mines is a complex of 3 mines from which one is existing (Mavres Petres), one is abandoned (Olympias) and one is new (Skouries). The proposed project covers all 3 mines as well as rehabilitation of the wider project area due to past mining activities.

  • The proposed works in the Mavre Petres mine are comprised of the following:

-Completion of Madem Lakkos backfilling and closure
-Current waste dumps to be incorporated into Kokkinolakkas Hazardous waste management facility
-Extension of existing operating mine
-New flotation plant, metal plant in Madem Lakkos
-Closure and rehabilitation of the plant

  • The proposed works in the Olympias mine are comprised of the following

-Olympias-Madem Lakkos tunnel, 9km long

-Upgrade works, underground & overground
-Completion of reconstruction of Olympias beneficiation plant
-Completion of access works
-Conservative ore extraction (300-400 kt/y)
-Ore extraction (800 kt/y) through new tunnel to Madem Lakkos. PbS, ZnS and gold bearing pyrites concentrates produced. Pyrites fed into ML metal plant together with Skouries ore to produce gold, silver, copper.
-Rehabilitation works

  • The proposed works in the Skouries mine are comprised of the following

-Main access road, connection to Palaiohori – Megali Panagia national road
-Main transport road for products
-Internal road network (mine to plant, mine to TMFs)
-Open pit and Underground works (main access tunnel, ore & ventilation shafts, connection tunnels)
-Beneficiation plant
-2 tailings waste management facilities for initial phase
-Ancillary infrastructure
-Rehabilitation works

Description of actual services provided by Enveco within the assignment:

The following tasks have been covered:

Task 1: Definition and environmental assessment of alternative locations of the proposed installations in the wider area, according to specific environmental criteria.

Task 2: Description of the existing characteristic of the Human and Natural environment in the wider project area, focusing in parameters that may be impacted by the construction, operation and rehabilitation of the project
Task 3: Detailed Assessment and evaluation of the main environmental impacts of the proposed project during the stages of construction, operation and rehabilitation
Task 4 : Supporting Studies. In the framework of the contract the following tasks were elaborated:
1. Ecological Baseline study for the wider project area where ecosystems, flora and fauna species are detailed recorder and evaluated in relation to their protection status
2. Mining waste management plant covering the requirements of directive 2006/21/EC
3. Water Management Plant covering the requirements of directive 2000/60
4. Development of an air quality assessment model for the assessment of relevant impact during the construction, operation and rehabilitation period
5. Development of an noise assessment model for the assessment of relevant impact during the construction, operation and rehabilitation period
6. Assessment of visual impacts on landscape
