Narrative description of Project:

  • Sapes Gold Project is related to a high grade gold deposit located in north eastern Greece, approximately 30km northwest of the Aegean Sea port city of Alexandroupolis. It consists of the following:

o The underground mine (The Viper deposit)
o The open pit mine (Saint Demetrius deposit)
o The ore treatment plant for the production of gold-rich concentrate as well as doré bars
o The Tailing Management Facility (TMF)
o The auxiliary water reservoir

  • Important figures of Sapes Gold Project

o Mining concession area: ~20 km2
o Underground mine, total production:       1,109,000 t
o Underground mine, gold concentration:   17.2 g/t Au
o Open pit mine, total production:       210,000 t
o Open pit mine, gold concentration:   3.5 g/t Au

  • Proposed works within the Sapes Gold Project include:

o Construction of beneficiation plant and special gravimetric unit
o Mining using ‘drift & fill’ method for the underground mine and ‘successive tiers’ for the open pit mine
o Total backfilling of the underground mine
o Construction of reservoir dam and TMF dam
o Ancillary infrastructure
o Post-closure rehabilitation

Description of actual services provided by Enveco within the assignment:


Services provided were phased as follows:

  • Phase 1: Preliminary environmental impact study (PEIS)
  • Phase 2: Supporting studies (SS)
  • Phase 3: Environmental & Social Impact Study (EIS)

The following tasks have been completed:


Task 1 (PEIS & EIS): Definition and environmental assessment of alternative locations of the proposed installations in the wider area, according to specific environmental criteria.
Task 2 (PEIS & EIS): Description of the existing characteristic of the Human and Natural environment in the wider project area, focusing in parameters that may be impacted by the construction, operation and rehabilitation of the project
Task 3 (SS): According to the Contract provisions, the following studies were elaborated:
o Ecological Baseline study for the wider project area; ecosystems, flora and fauna species were recorded in detail and evaluated in relation to their significance and protection status
o Mining waste management plant covering the requirements of directive 2006/21/EC
o Ambient air quality monitoring program; PM10 and heavy metals measurements in on-site ambient air; duration: 9 months
o Development of an air quality assessment model for the assessment of relevant impact during the construction, operation and rehabilitation period
o Development of a noise assessment model for the assessment of relevant impact during the construction, operation and rehabilitation period
o Social Cost-benefit Analysis; it analyzes social costs and social utility emerging from the investment, which should be taken into account for permitting of projects of this magnitude
o Evaluation of risks and anticipated measures for their prevention and mitigation
o Wastewater and sewage study; analysis and management plan for wastewater & sewage water
Task 4 (EIS): Detailed assessment and evaluation of the main environmental impacts of the proposed project during the stages of construction, operation and rehabilitation. In this stage all findings from the SS were incorporated in the EIS.
