Detailed Project Description

  • Data collection of the existing conditions in relation to man-made and natural environment of the islands’ region.
  • Noise measurement on specifically chosen spots and noise impact assessment
  • Assessment of environmental impacts on the project area and the wider region, both during the project’s construction, as well as during the operation of wind parks
  • A choice of the project’s site is proposed, aiming at the satisfaction of environmental criteria and at the minimization of potential environmental impacts
  • The wind energy parks were finally designed with a target of yielding more power than what was initially planned. More specifically, the total power of them would initially be designed to reach 650MW, however a review of the study was accomplished and changes were made, as the target was finally set at 706MW in total.
  • Evaluation of corrective measures for the mitigation of potential environmental impacts and presentation of the suggested Environmental Terms
  • Ornithological research in the area where wind farms are to be installed, within or in proximity of Special Protection Areas (SPA) on the north Aegean islands of Lemnos, Chios and Lesvos.
  • Brief description of avifauna habitats in the study area.
  • Presentation of legislative framework pertaining to the avifauna study and the methodology applied during field work.
  • Data collection and recording of significant site specific characteristics, such as cohesive or loose habitations of reproduction and massive perching. Data collection of nesting, resting and feeding sites of important bird species,  migrating corridors and habitat attributes attractive to birds, such as a cluster of trees, cliffs etc.
  • Clarification of habitat use patterns pertaining to migrating avifauna species and raptor species found in the study area.
  • Assessment of impacts on avifauna caused by the construction and operation of wind farms due to disturbance, displacement, habitat occupation, barrier effect  and collision risks.
  • Highlighting wind turbines, which seem to be presenting high risks in regards to avifauna and providing a mitigating plan towards impacts on avifauna, such as Radar accoutrement installation, which will serve the detection of avifauna species in preselected group of wind turbines, as well as an avifauna monitoring program.

​Description of actual services provided by Enveco within the assignment:


Our staff covered the issues related to all phases of the preparation of the project. In particular, the following tasks have been covered:


Task 1: Coordination of field work, aiming towards avifauna data collection in the study area during hibernation period, spring and autumn migration periods, as well as during reproduction period.
Task 2: Primary data collection of avifauna, mapping of avifauna records and corridors of important avifauna species  within the study area and highlighting of nesting sites, in order to attain optimal project design
Task 3: Data elaboration and assessment of the study area’s ornithological value.
Task 4: Highlighting and assessing important avifauna species in the study area and assessment of project’s impacts on them.
Task 5: Baseline Ecologic Study of the wider region of Lesbos, Chios and Limnos
Task 2: Data analysis and composition of baseline ornithological and ecological assessments.
Task 3: Analysis of wind energy parks’ site choice and final decision, based on the target of minimizing negative environmental    impacts on both the natural, as well as man-made environment.
Task 4: Evaluation of corrective measures for the mitigation of potential environmental impacts and presentation of the suggested Environmental Terms
